The Daily Almanac: The War is On!

Sure enough, the big “Secret Project” that FUNimation’s Events Manager Adam Sheehan was teasing about last week was the War on Pants promotional campaign. As explained in this hilarious Inglorious Basterds parody video, otaku going to Katsucon this weekend will be on a mission of killin’ Nazis creating panty paper airplanes. Lt. Ano May then goes on to call on the brave soldiers to fly these “weapons of pants destruction” and show those damn khakis who’s boss.

Two new paper airplane designs will be available each day of the convention at the FUNimation dealer booth, and supplies will be limited. There will be a special panel on Saturday night were con goers can enter paper plane contests and win prizes. And finally, the company has once again enlisted the services of American Cosplay Paradise to supply the booth with Strike Witches cosplayers through out the entire weekend.

As always, keep it locked to my Twitter feed this weekend for live, round-the-clock coverage direct from the frontlines in Katsucon as the War on Pants continues.

Do not weep.

War is kind.

I’m currently snowed in at my apartment in New Jersey because of a blizzard today, but Katsucon ensures us all that the convention is still on for this weekend. Weather reports indicate that the snow will stop sometime tonight, leaving us a full day on Thursday to dig ourselves out. People flying in tomorrow should expect delays in the morning, but everything should be cleared up by afternoon.

Reed Exhibitions reminded us with the blizzard today that this would be the time of year that they would usually hold the New York Comic Con, so it’s a good thing they moved it to October.

Yahoo debuted a new trailer for The Last Airbender movie, and oh my god, it’s freaking sweet! With this and the live action Scott Pilgrim movie coming out this summer, I think we American otaku are going to have plenty to look forward to in the box office this year.

Along with the Strike Witches promotion, Sheehan also announced FUNimation’s entire game plan for Katsucon. Two things stood out to me. The first is that they’re offering random grab bags of DVDs for a ridiculously low price. You can either get three single volume DVDs for $10 or three DVD box sets for $30. At prices like that, I’m probably going to buy a bag just out of curiosity of what’s inside.

The other interesting thing they’re doing is holding a contest to win a $25 gift card to the stores and restaurants around the convention center. They suggest you buy yourself a decent lunch with that money. Considering how strap-for-cash con goers tend to be at these events, paying for a good lunch is a mighty tempting offer.

Did you read my review of Soul Eater yesterday? Apparently everyone also posted their own reviews of the series yesterday, and every single person loved it. So seriously, peeps, check it out.

And finally, I hope you all enjoyed that very special Daily Almanac yesterday on Chu-Bra. I was sort of surprised that it created the kind of controversy it did, but given this blog’s history, I guess it’s to be expected. But like all of my controversial posts in the past, I absolutely stand by everything I wrote in that essay, and I believe I did an adequate job in explaining my reasoning within the article.

I guess the only thing I can say about this hubbub is that anime is supposed to be fun and entertaining. Rather then spending my time talking about all the stuff I don’t like about the genre, I use this space to celebrate all the things that I love about it. I love bishojo. I love moé. I love sexy images.

So yes, I love shows like Chu-Bra and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I will celebrate this enjoyment whenever I can, just like how I’m hyping up this “War on Pants” nonsense lately.

Because that’s all it is – fun, stupid nonsense. And if you’re not having fun, then you’re doing it wrong. 😉

So quit with the hating, peeps. Maybe you don’t like a certain type of anime, and that’s okay. But there’s no need to start raging on the people who do like it. It’s just cartoons, so just sit back and enjoy them.
